This will break your heart
At last month’s Health Team meeting in town, I learned something disturbing. One of the representatives from an NGO informed us that the number of reported sexual assaults on children under the age of 10 had increased nationally.
It seems as if the myth of having sex with virgins to eliminate an HIV infection is far from dead. Desperate people are trying sick, sick things.
On a slightly happier note, timed for World AIDS Day (Dec. 1), Swaziland reported a decrease in HIV prevalence – to 39.2%. This is still the highest in the world but at least it is in a more hopeful direction. Every other survey of HIV seroprevalence in antenatal clinics since 1992 (3.9%) has gone sharply up.
